Running the VPN inside the guest rather than on the host is the right call for compartmentalisation, though it is worth stating plainly that it does nothing about browser fingerprinting — which is what actually identifies most people. DNS leak testing from inside the VM is the step people skip. Useful writeup, especially the note about the MTU issues on nested tunnels, which is where these setups usually break.
