The Best Usenet Indexes 2020

Note On Usenet Access

Before you can download from the Usenet, you need a provider. Newsdemon is a reliable option. I list all my recommended providers here.

Best Free Usenet Search Engines

Binsearch is a free public Usenet search engine but it’s quite rudimentary. Nzbfriends is another public search.

If you need a better organized, more comprehensive NZB search, try a member-only site. These sites generally require an invitation for access, but they are often open for public registration — I list the currently open ones below.

Here are my recommendations:

  • NZB.su: Very comprehensive index — registration is currently open — free search currently disabled — $15 per year for VIP access
  • NZBFinder: Comprehensive index — registration open — 10€ for VIP access — for 30€ per year you get access to the Spotweb index (a supplemental decentralized Usenet index)
  • NZBGeek: Currently requires invitation, fairly comprehensive index. Sometimes has a Captcha on the login page, but otherwise very good. $12 per year or $40 for VIP lifetime access.
  • Nzbplanet.net: Open registration. Their search produces good results but somewhat limited index, VIP access costs £8 ($10) per year or £40 lifetime
  • Drunken Slug: This index is said to be good, but I haven’t tested. Registration currently closed
  • NZBmegasearch: an open source usenet index – here’s a fairly technical guide to installing it in the cloud

Combining Usenet Indexes

You can combine Usenet indexes using the program NZBHydra2 — details here. This really helps to make your search more comprehensive.

An alternative to NZBHydra2 seems to be NZBmegasearch. I have not tested, but here’s a fairly technical guide to installing it.

How To Get Usenet Access

Before you can start downloading from Usenet, you need to pay for Usenet access from a provider. You can expect to pay about $10-$15 per month for access. See my article The Best Usenet Provider for more details.

The Best Usenet Client: SABNZDb

You’ll need an application to download all your files. My recommended app is SABnzbd (for Windows, Mac and Linux). If you download a lot, consider saving files directly to an external hard drive.

Use a VPN For Privacy

It’s unlikely that you’ll be spied upon when using the Usenet, but it is still a possibility. Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a straightforward way to conceal your IP address, and ensure your privacy.

You want a VPN that allows P2P transfers on their servers, like ExpressVPN or Private Internet Access.

See all my recommended providers in this post: The Best VPN For P2P.

  2. Hi, I love audiobooks and ‘swallow’ one to two a week. Could someone give me an invite to abook.link? See a lot of posts from them on the net.

    1. You can request an invite to https://abook.link by visiting their chat at https://abook.link/chat/ or IRC SynIRC #abook.link and messaging that you want an invite. Have patience and someone on the invite team will either respond to you when they see it, or periodically ask who wants an invite. They are pretty much the best source for audiobooks on Usenet.

  3. I believe I did a password reset on DrunkenSlug, without having an account, and it created an account when it sent me the password reset email.

  4. Thanks for this review.

I have subscribed to nzb.su and must say that their support is both inept and outright rude. When I brought up a throttling query, all I got was the most ridiculous of replies from someone claiming that they could not understand what I am asking and complaining about.

Can’t vouch for any other entries or services, as I have not tried them.

    1. Post

The indexes recommended here are most run by hackers as grey services, and thus the customer supports tends to be hit or miss. NZB.su does continue to supply the most comprehensive index. But the other providers listed here offer good indexes too.

  5. Hi thanks for great informative page. Quick question: What is in your opinion best indexer for old classic TV shows and cartoons? Thanks

  6. I’d rather just set one up on my home computer. Although I guess I’m kind of lucky because my college has a VPN server (I think mainly so students can access on-campus resources from off campus, like network shares and such) so I don’t have to pay for one if I need to use one.

  7. Thanks for the article, it was relevant and informative. I read your Best VPN recommendations (thanks for those) but I would also add this VPN – https://surfshark.com/ . I use it personally and really enjoy (I think they are worth your list). Overall keep up the good work!

  8. So I’ve been using Private Internet Access for a while now and it’s satisfactory, though it could have had more servers in more countries. But I can’t argue with the price.

I’ve also used Astrill and ExpressVPN.
I don’t like Astrill’s privacy policy (it even wants your personal info to sign up), and I used ExpressVPN for a month, it wasn’t faster than PIA.

    1st priority = actual privacy
    2nd = speed
    Do you have any recommendations?

  9. Hiya, I am really glad I have found this info. Nowadays bloggers publish just about gossips and internet and this is actually irritating. A good site with interesting content, this is what I need. Thank you for keeping this web site, I’ll be visiting it. Do you do newsletters? Can not find it

  10. The indexer with the most modern UI is probably nzbwolf.com

It has all the obfuscated usenet content for movies and tv shows you need. And their porn section has the best and most complete preview material. I did not find any other site that can compete with their porn section.

  11. I recently found https://nzbhydra.com with a great index and search functionality (only movies, tv and porn). They have a very good preview in their porn section (turn on the image preview settings) – I did not find any other usenet index that offers so many preview for adult scene releases.

What I personally also like is their default search settings: they show the releases from the last 2 days sorted by number of downloads. So you can check stuff that just came up and is important to other users. Also their search is blazing fast and their UI is totally custom, no newznab script and is good to browse on mobile. Only downside: free accounts cannot download nzb files or use the api.

    1. Agreed Nzbfinder is very well taken care. Any issues I’ve had the op replied fairly quickly and resolved indexer issues and other issues I was having.

  12. Hi there. Could somebody please send me an invite to Abook.ws please? I would really appreciate it as I love listening to audio books. Thanks much in advance.

  13. Check out anonzbs.com also. Free user registration for 3 downloads/day, or $10 for 1 year of unlimited downloads & API calls.

Speed, simplicity & reliability are the focus. Making is easy to find quality Usenet binaries.

  14. Thank you for providing this information. Is there any chance I could get an invite to abook.ws, please? Thank you very much.

    1. You all should have a look at nzbfinder.ws

These guys are arond for over 4 years now and operate a smooth operation. They only index HD content and are fast, really fast.

Thx for the great support and keep up the good work.

  15. I need nzb.su invite. Have waffles.fm invite to trade. Jackturnerinc at hotmail dot com

  16. Thanks for the article! I’ve been looking for an invite to NZB.su for about a year now… 🙁
    Mind tossing out an invite?

    1. Would LOVE an invite to NZB.su Ive got one of the largest Plex servers on the net and would like to expand my downloading capabilities.

      Would be MUCH APPRECIATED!

  17. I am surprised to see nzb.ag not on this list. It has been online in three forms since I joined it a few years back. Very reliable index and admins dont ask for any money at all – no donation no bitcoin nothing, been great. Would recommend it, also it is run by a few of the nn or nzedb guys which is great.

      1. Yeah, we (nzb.ag) have been online in three forms, originally since 2007; opening up beyond a small set of friends in late 2009, switched domains in 2013.

It went offline briefly, but because overall the remaining indexer(s) weren’t satisfying my need for speed (overall search etc), it came back online in some capacity. I may open it back up for registration; as right now it’s (new infra) being tested by a very small handful of people.

        1. Probably helps to mention there is $0 fee, no donation link, no asks for donations, no limit on API requests. The only ask is to (1) not be an ass (2) dont share your account, considering it’s open to everyone.

          – don’t log IPs

But we aka the few people who manage it don’t spend time working out new features like sites who charge money. It has one set of goals, stay online, stay indexing, and provide .nzb releases when the crap we want comes out.

          Simple 🙂

  18. Please add NZBFinder.ws to this list as it’s one of the finer indexers out there and has been running for over 2,5 years now.

  19. Are you aware of any apps out there which can help find duplicate movies/shows and then let you select which to delete based on quality, audio capabilities etc?

  20. It was my understanding that a usenet server would hide your IP. Is an additional VPN still needed?

    1. Using a VPN with a Usenet is mostly unecessary. Basically, if you use secure connections to Usenet server, the only thing that your ISP can see is that you are making a secure connection to a Usenet provider. A VPN will mask this secure connection.

  21. Spain has become renowned for that level of internet piracy present.
The creation of Dish Network portals has reduced the price tag on satellite
TV channels greatly. A number of musicians have been can not sustain themselves thereby they have opted to
doing other ventures of the side.

  22. Why NZBgeek is not in the list.. it is far more superior nzbsite among others..
it is community based with friendly people in it. also great support through chat system or forums..
it is fast.. especially their new feature geekseek. you can use this feature for auto send to ur sab or nzbget without using sick beard or cp anymore to manage things..

it has filtered from password or fake…
it has request section.. which is awesome.

give it a try and if you registered don’t hesitate to pm me (phenom) for referral.

    1. The provider gives you access to Usenet, you get access all the messages and binaries.

An indexer allows you to search via keywords, for media or messages on the Usenet.

A Usenet client is the application that allows you download the media.

  25. Where can i find scene releases like this SunnyHill-1st_Album_Part.A_Sunny_Blues-WEB-KR-2014-LEV

    1. You’re right, it recently went invite only. However, it’s fairly easy to get in. You can just drop by the chat, read the topic and politely ask for an invitation. Another way is /r/usenetinvites on reddit.

  26. cant belive jttp://nzbplanet.net is not up there, its probibley better than 99% of those above sites?

  27. Hey stay in there ,I think NZBS.org in july 1 2014 is best then Dog and nab.su are tied and are the best but they dont make magic ,they get you better and faster NZBs sometimes but they all do the same but spome are better stick with it and oznzb too ,try reddit a friend got all the ones I mentioned and there are other good sites ,sites cant get too big or they wont exist at all

  28. ive been using nzbplanet.net for over a year now since nzbmatrix went down,i found them loads better than other indexers currently out there

  29. the new version of SABnzbd has just been released and now supports full integration into OZnzb.com ratings and reporting system. Once enabled you can rate all releases downloaded from OZnzb.com and post comments and/or report any problems all directly from inside of SAB. There is also an option to automatically report problems with releases like passworded/encrypted, out of server retention and missing blocks.

•Upgrade embedded unrar to 5.01 and (partially) support RAR5 format
•Support for more meta-data in NZB files (to be used in TV Sort)
•Optional integration with the OZnzb indexer, allows user access to ratings and reporting > * directly from SABnzbd interface.
•Optional automatic feedback to OZnzb on failed downloads
•Commandline option –pidfile to set your own PID-file name/path (Unix and OSX)
•Basic support for X-DNZB-Failure and X-DNZB-Details headers, sent by some indexers
    •Support rate-limiting by (a number of) indexers
•Special option “warn_dupl_jobs” to suppress/enable warnings for duplicate jobs
•Special option “flat_unpack” to ignore folders inside archives

    Bug fixes
•Fix false encryption alarms for some posts
•Fix issue with OSX Mavericks Notification Center support
•Fix issues with passwords embedded in file names
•Support UNC paths in Sort expressions (Windows)
•Add password entry boxes in smpl and Classic skins
•Prevent unwanted change of queue order after editing job details
•Allow Default category to be picked in Multi-Ops

          1. Would you still have an NZB.su invite left? Still looking for one 🙁 want to start with this too. (finalangeljp (at) hotmail.com)
